The meaning of Armadillo

In Spanish the word armadillo means “little armored one” but I’m talking about a larger meaning.
Highway A1A between Jacksonville Beach and St. Augustine was known by some of us as “Armadillo Alley” due to so many ‘dillos there scurrying around in the scrubby, sandy flatwoods or squished into the asphalt.
I wouldn’t necessarily have an armadillo as a pet but I’m glad to see them surviving.
In times of trouble, they curl up into a hard shelled ball.
A lot of us do. A lot of us deploy a tough exterior to protect the softness inside of ourselves.
